Anxiety + Tarot
Hello and welcome to May I spoon you?! I hope this week finds you well and as always thank you for sharing this space with me. I have changed the format of my newsletter but just slightly. Please let me know what you think!
As I start to write this, I decide to begin with a tarot card pull. I pull the Ace of Wands.
I have no idea what it means, I have to look through the guidebook. To my surprise, the guidebook states the following of the Ace of Wands: Aces mean new beginnings and this one is all about pursuing an inspiring, exciting and absorbing new project, role or job, which, although you may not be really qualified for it, is going to be successful and fulfilling. This card says “Go for it (from The Good Karma tarot guidebook).
I have read several articles about writers using tarot to help them guide their writing process. At first, I was skeptical, but to my surprise it does work. I read that you are to ask the deck a question, but I usually just pull from the deck and see where it takes me. Once I pull a card, I read its details in the guidebook and that usually provides me a starting point. Above all, it has weirdly calmed my anxiety.
I have always been drawn to tarot because of its beautiful images. Yet, I never looked further into it as I viewed the whole process as a sacred ritual that I was not worthy of participating in. While I still believe this to be partly true, I was allowing my anxiety to get the best of me. I was drawn to The Modern Witch tarot for its beautiful illustrations and vibrant colors. I have heard that it is bad luck to buy your own deck and therefore I asked my sister to purchase it for me. I then purchased a tarot deck bag from Etsy to keep the deck more sacred as I plan to carry it with me in case I feel the need for a pull. I have started a ritual to pull a card before I start writing, but I want to take it further. I plan to pull a card daily, but once the day starts I tend to forget.
I wish I could remember how I came across Monique, whom I ask for more in-depth readings and the occasional oracle card pull. I do know that the cards do not determine your future but so far they have been guiding my writing journey.
This week
Last week, I joined a 4-week trauma writing course. I am over the moon, as this is my first writing course. We meet for one hour a week. Last week’s session defined trauma and the effects it has on the body. We were then guided through a few exercises to unlock our writing process and our archetype role, which I am very excited to further explore. Finally, we were left with this gem: Trauma not transformed is trauma transferred. Generational trauma is something that I hope to explore as my family suffers from it. If you are interested in sharing your writing or meeting to discuss writing, let me know. Would love to connect!
Now, May I spoon you?
92Y will be hosting a virtual conversation between Aidy Bryant and Bowen Yang in which they will be discussing Aidy’s new season of Hulu’s Shrill. I will be attending! I am a huge Aidy Bryant fan and enjoy her show, Shrill. I love everything about Aidy Bryant and look forward to her SNL sketches. Below is my favorite Aidy Bryant SNL sketch. Also, Bowen Yang, that’s all. What a wonderful way to end the work week! If you plan to attend, let me know.
